from the garden, allure magazine, what's bringing you joy
Last month I took the first part of my fall harvest garden class. It ended at 9pm, just as the sun was going down. I rushed home and, by the light of my phone flashlight, planted a row of carrots. I have no idea if they will grow but I’m having a wonderful time watching, waiting, and watering.
:: mid-year check-in ::
When I looked back at my notes from the class they felt like mid-year studio reminders:
The fall growing season can be the opposite of the spring rush. There is more consistent rain. Cold weather makes some things taste better (spring makes some things hot, stressed and bitter). Cocoon your fall plants from the harsh winds. When you plant the seeds think about where you will be in two months and how much salad you want to eat.
Where do you want to be in two months? What left you with a bitter taste in the spring that might feel/be/taste more delicious in the fall? Just a couple questions for you to ponder as the days get shorter.
:: allure magazine ::
I’m very honored to be featured in the September issue of Allure Magazine in a piece by Paige Staples about how artists are “turning beauty products into canvases.” I talked with Paige about the inspiration behind my Olay Body bottle design. The issue is on newsstands now if you’d like to read the short piece IRL. Shop online or check out your local Target to purchase the body wash.
:: snail mail joy ::
Earlier this summer I invited folks to sign-up for my snail mail newsletter experiment. Many of you said yes and I thank you for joining me in this little project! When I can, I’ll pop something into the mail via USPS. The vision for the digital and analog newsletter is to capture moments from the studio - scraps, notes, reminders, and inspiration. With this snail mail experiment I want to bring a tiny bit of joy to your physical mail experience. If you haven’t already signed up, you can put your full mailing address here.
During the sign-up process I asked what was bringing you all joy and reading through these responses made me smile. Here’s an abbreviated list:
- the first sip of iced coffee on a hot muggy morning
- Being held by water
- Regaining the mental & physical energy to create again <3
- New friends!
- Visiting a childhood friend after many years
- The foggy wooded trails of West Virginia
- biking along the greenway on the west side
- sleeping with the windows open, waking with sunshine on my face
- lowercase letters
- Zinnias
- Perfectly ripe fruit and the Carolina Wren in my neighborhood who serenades us every day
- books in every shape and form!
- Calendula
- My new knee!
- lightning bugs
- The shadows that show up throughout the day in the first apartment I've lived in alone.
- My little family all cuddled in bed
